umbrella today: simplicity is beauty

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

I recently came across a website which is simply beautiful. One of those ideas where all the fluff was stripped away to deliver a perfectly functional and readily acceptable web service. The site is Umbrella Today (even the domain is simple!). This product of the clever guys over at thoughtbot tells you whether you need an umbrella or not based on your zip code.

Now for the icing on the cake: you enter your mobile number and it will text in the morning before you leave your house to let you know whether or not you should bring an umbrella with you for the day!

Mobile Anti-theft in Africa

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

I have recently started following a new blog, AfriGadget, a blog that follows innovations in Africa. Really neat stuff, and truly inspiring. They recently posted a story of a young inventor, Morris Mbetsa an 18 year in Kenya who has created a car anti-theft system using a mobile phone. Not only is someone alerted when their car is turned on, they are able listen to what is going on in the car, as well as instantly shut off and lock the motor from the phone. The concept could be implemented anywhere in the world and is especially relevant in Kenya with the high rate of car theft. Check out :

To top it off, Morris is a completely self-taught inventor!

Social Mobile Phones

Idea: how cool would it be if you could introduce people using the mobile phone?! So if I want to introduce Dave to Thianh, I can send a short message, which introduces the two to each other and at the same time includes their contact details. Would work perfect at conferences, networking events, or even at a bar.

Ideally this would make a great iPhone application.  For those without smartphones the contact information could come in the form of a text message.

A while back we wrote about a similar concept: Mobile Proximity Networking. An idea that seems to have become a reality with the GPS enabled iPhones!

Scheduled cell phone silencing

shedule silence your cell phone[Here is an idea sent over to incubaker from Omead K. Capistrano Valley Senior. Thanks for sharing your great idea Omead!]

The problem: A few weeks ago my phone went off in class because I had forgotten to silence it. I had gotten into the habit of silencing my phone during the week, and leaving the ring tone on over the weekend, but for some reason I had forgotten to silence it that Monday morning. This got me to thinking…

The Idea: Why can’t we schedule when our phones go on silent? I was thinking it could be an option on the calendar; for each appointment you could choose “silent” or “not silent”. I thought that this was so simple that it must be on some phone somewhere and looked it up online…to no avail. Hopefully this turns up within a couple of years.
